The open serving hatch of the Kaffeeklappe on a wet Winterhude street, two people in rain jackets waiting under the overhang

Sierichstraße 128 · Hamburg-Winterhude · since 2016

Nothing over three euros

Good coffee, hatch prices

A hatch in a wall, a brewer that never stops and a bakery tray at twenty to six. No dining room, no table service, no four-euro cappuccino. Just the window, the ledge and the queue.

The price wall

One board. Flat prices. No sizes to upsell.

Everything on this wall is under three euros, and it stays there. There is no large, no medium, no syrup menu and no seasonal surcharge. If a price moves, it moves once a year and we write why on the board.

The Kannen-Tarif

Bring any thermos. We fill it and charge by the litre.

Hand a flask through the hatch, we rinse it with hot water and fill it from the same brewer as everything else. The more you take, the less each litre costs. It is the one thing on the site that breaks the three-euro rule — and the only one worth breaking it for.

House rules for the pot

  1. Any flask, any brand, any age. Clean is enough, it does not have to be pretty.

  2. We rinse with hot water first. If it smells of last week’s soup we will say so.

  3. Milk goes in cold jugs on the side, never into the flask.

  4. From four litres, ring ahead by 4 pm the day before.

Breakfast at the hatch

Until eleven, and every part priced on its own.

We do not bundle. There is no set, no deal and no upgrade path — you take a roll, or a roll and an egg, or an egg and nothing else, and each thing costs what it says on the board. That is how a breakfast at a hatch stays under three euros a piece.

Build it yourself

Tap the things you want. The total is what you would hand over at the hatch.

Served 06:00–11:00 on weekdays, 07:30–11:00 on Saturdays. Warm rolls until roughly nine.

The daily board

One thing is different every day.

Bettina writes it on the enamel board at half five and rubs it out when we shut. It is not a campaign, it is what was cheap or what there is too much of.

The stamp card

Ten filter coffees, the eleventh is ours.

The paper card is still on the ledge if you want one. This is the same card, kept in your own browser — no account, no app, no email address and nothing sent anywhere. Clear your browser and it is gone, which is the honest trade.

Opening hours

Six in the morning until the pastries run out.

The brewer goes on at ten to six. We shut when we shut — if the tray is empty at one o’clock on a Saturday, the shutter comes down at one o’clock.

Holiday notice

Closed on 3 October for the Day of German Unity. Works holiday from 12 to 19 October — the shutter stays down and the bakery tray goes to the Kita on Dorotheenstraße.

Who is behind the hatch

Bettina Ohlsen opened the hatch in 2016 after nineteen years behind a canteen counter in the harbour. Kadir Yılmaz does the bakery run, the books and the brewer. Between them that is the entire staff, which is the other reason the coffee costs what it costs.

Find us

Sierichstraße 128, on the corner, under the overhang.

Look for the shutter and the queue. There is no terrace and no seating — there is a steel ledge, a roof that keeps four people dry and a bench across the road for everyone else.

Questions people actually ask

Through the hatch, roughly once an hour.

  • Is there anywhere to sit?

No. There is a hatch, a steel ledge and a roof overhang that keeps the rain off about four people. That is the whole reason the coffee costs what it costs.

  • Card or cash?

Both, from the first cent. Girocard, credit card, Apple Pay and Google Pay. No minimum, no surcharge.

  • Do you charge extra for oat milk?

No. Oat, whole milk or none — same price. Charging fifty cents for a splash of oats is how you end up with a four euro cappuccino.

  • What if I bring my own cup?

Twenty cents off, every time, on everything hot. Bring a thermos instead and you are on the Kannen-Tarif, which is cheaper still.

  • Why is it this cheap?

Six square metres of rent, no dining room to heat, no table service, one brewer, a short list and two people who own the place. Nothing is subsidised and nothing is a loss leader.

  • Can I order pots in advance for the office?

Yes, and please do from four litres upwards. Call us or use the form below by 4 pm the day before and it will be standing ready.

  • Dogs?

Obviously. There is a water bowl under the ledge from March onwards and Bettina keeps biscuits by the till.

Pre-orders and messages

Order pots for the office, or just say something.

From four litres upwards we need a day’s notice. Everything else you can ask at the hatch, but if you would rather write, this reaches Kadir’s inbox.

Or ring the hatch on +49 40 55440912 between six and half two.
